APPLY FOR A JOB IN ONE WEEK

This goal is assumed to help you get started with your job search and help you understand what you will need to do to get a job you want, not just any job. The best way to learn is to try, and then reflect on what you did. The perfect job is out there, but maybe not right now, so if you start looking and get good at applying, then you are ready to apply for the perfect job once it opens up.

Day 1

1. Write down what you’re looking for

Defining what you want from your new job helps you get going and creates a realistic filter.

(what things you ask? Things like benefits, location, size, ideals, salary, colleagues, advancement opportunities or even an inside basketball court.)

2. Search for available jobs and select 1

Do a quick scrub of your social network and the web to find some leads. Skim through 10 of them and select the 3 that come closest to your wishes. Remember: these three jobs do not have to be your dream-jobs, they are first of all a way to train your applying skills, and if you are offered one of them, then you can use it as a stepping stone towards the dream gig.

3. Reflect on your felling

How does this whole ordeal make you feel? Keep track and you’ll feel better!

Day 2

4. Write or update your resume

Yeah, we know it’s boring but you have to. If you don’t even have one then today is when you make the first draft. Based on the 3 jobs you are going to apply for, what things can you add, keep, cut, or edit to show you are the person for the job? If you find that you need a different resume for each job then, by all means, make specific ones.

Day 3

5. Write or update a Cover Letter

You can probably find a hundred opinions on how to write a good cover letter so we will just list the most important ones: Keep it short, describe yourself like a friend would and check spelling and grammar at least twice.

Day 4

6. Write a “base”- application

Since you are applying for three jobs in such a short time, you can save plenty of time by writing one “base”-application which you use for all the jobs, and then add specifics for each job. The base should contain a greeting, a very short summary of you, a generic compliment, space for the specifics and then a sign-off.

Day 5

7. Write an application for your job

Select one of the jobs you want and open the listing. Focus on the specific things they are looking for and ask yourself how your skills and your personality would fit their needs and bring great results. Do some research on the company and find a reason why you want to work with them apart from getting paid and mention this reason early in the application.

Day 6

8. Read through the job application and make edits

This is the most boring part but it’s super important. Read through each part of your application slowly and make sure you have correct grammar and spelling. Now that it’s been a few days since you wrote the application you might come across a choice of words that seems strange, so go ahead and edit anything that feels jiffy. Double-check your email address and phone number so you know they can reach you.

9. Send the job application

Gather your resume, cover letter, and the correct application and send them to the appropriate person. Reward yourself with something for the effort and wait for the responses.
